Mozart at Hukvaldy

With the summer coming up there are various open-air festivals going to take place. The opera ensemble of the NMST is once again going to participate in the 17th year of the International Music Festival Janáčkovy Hukvaldy, this time with Mozart’s Requiem.
Who would not think of one of the most compelling scenes in Forman’s film Amadeus where the sick and exhausted genius is dictating the score of his unfinished work to Salieri? (A propos the play, which became later the basis for the film, will be the last premiere of the season in the NMST.)
And so on the first day of the festival, Saturday 26th June at 8 pm, this magnificent piece of music will sound throughout the comforting place of Hukvaldy’s park under the baton of Jan Šrubař.

Peter Shaffer (1926)

AMADEUS

If it hadn’t been for Amadeus, hardly anyone would know Salieri today… Peter Shaffer has scored success with his play all over the world and he has done Salieri, the court composer of the imperial Vienna, a great service. Firstly he refuted a common fallacy spread out by Pushkin that Mozart was poisoned by Salieri and secondly he portrays Salieri as the main instigator of Mozart’s difficulties. He also puts Salieri in the role of an average musician who challenges God alone to a fight.
Peter Shaffer has not written a big amount of plays but nearly every title of his has become a “stage bestseller” (Amadeus ran for 1200 performances on Broadway alone and the film Amadeus by Miloš Forman received eight Oscars; Shaffer’s film script, however, is different from the stage one - namely in the portrayal of some characters).
In both cases the author succeeded in depicting masterfully the behind-the-scenes intrigues at the Emperor’s court and in displaying the time of Joseph II in its splendour, brilliance and filth. Amadeus is a story of an era, in which people woke, breakfasted, went to church, were cuckolded and went to sleep to the sound of string quartets…
The play is directed by Pavel Šimák and besides the actors also the opera and ballet soloists appear in the production. In the leading roles you will see Jan Fišar, Igor Orozovič and Andrea Mohylová and further Petr Houska, František Strnad, Vladimír Čapka, Miroslav Rataj and many others. The set designer is Jaroslav Čermák and the costumes have been designed by Blanka Tesařová.

A COMEDY ABOUT HELLISH TRAPS

Man is a sinful creature and they know it well in the Hell. The Devil makes a pact with seven Vices (or Sins if you wish) and together they set off to the earth to lure people into the snares of Pride, Greed, Gluttony, Adultery, Envy, Anger and Idleness. That they are successful in their efforts we do not need to emphasize. A young man Labyrinth longing to gratify his desires sells his soul to the Devil. However, the powers of Heaven will not leave it at that and they decide to fight with the Devil for the men’s souls...
“We humbly ask for quiet patience as well as close attention. When we have learned philosophy we will tell the gentlemen something sharp and witty. Should you not like it, please do not disparage it. Do you know better? Then do it yourself.”
The excerpt from the new play tells us how the characters speak. The earthy folk language of the Baroque period is surprisingly fresh and although it uses some spicy words without scruple they organically fit in with the plot.
You will hear many period songs and because we talk of vices the songs are equally provocative, even rude at times, but always amusing. They have been preserved thanks to the knight Jan Jeník of Bratřice and Karel Jaromír Erben. They will be sung by the actors accompanied by a live band.
The comedy is directed by Ondrej Spišák (those of you who remember “Three Men on the Bummel” know that he is a master of comedy); the set and costumes designer is Marta Roszkopfová. The cast features: Veronika Forejtová, Tomáš Jirman, Vladimír Polák, Anna Cónová, Pavlína Kafková, Renáta Klemensová, Lada Bělašková, Jiří Sedláček, František Večeřa and David Viktora.

Last Performance of The Lady in the Van

"I told you I was going on a private trip. I’m not dead. You’ll know when I am," assures the main character in The Lady in the Van (played by Veronika Forejtová) her “landlord” at one of the grotesque moments.
The story of the homeless Miss Shepherd, who parked her van in the garden of Mr. Bennett, is a true story that the author has experienced personally and later turned into a successful play.
The bitter comedy about things, which are important in life and about the way we are able or want to communicate with our neighbours, was staged by the NMST and it had its Czech premiere half a year ago. It is directed by Petr Štindl.
The last – seventeenth – performance of The Lady in the Van is scheduled on Friday 4th June at 7 pm in the Antonín Dvořák Theatre.
