“I am using the Italian language. It is better because it sounds nice and the work is easier.”, wrote Bohuslav Martinů in his letter home on 16th February 1954. From 1953, the composer worked on his new opera in Nizza. As the basis for his libretto, Martinů had chosen the play La locandiera (also known as The Mistress of the Inn or Mirandolina) written by Carlo Goldoni (1707 – 1783), the Italian author of famous comedies.

Martinů created a playful and cheerful world of original situation comedy about a witty woman and love. The opera is full of beautiful singing and amusing music lit with southern sun. The opera is performed for the very first time in our country in Italian.

Sung in Italian with Czech subtitles
