ORPHEUS IN THE UNDERWORLD
May 13, 2011, 6.30 PM - Antonín Dvořák Theatre
Opera buffa in two acts.
Since its premiere in 1858 in Paris this work by a master of operetta has become one of the most popular titles of its genre. Its immortality was ensured by the famous Cancan as well as by other melodies that are rightfully considered one of the treasures of operetta. In the mythological story about Orpheus and his wife Eurydice it is possible to detect criticism of the state of the society in Paris in the middle of 19th century. The society has been developing and so it can be presented today as sharp witty political and social satire topped with compelling immortal Offenbach’s music.
