IL SOFFIO DELLE FATE
/Conducted by: Alessandro Sangiorgi as a guest, Jan Šrubař, directed by: Luděk Golat/
The libretto of the opera “Il soffio delle fate“ (literary translated as „Breath of fairies“ or „Fairy breath“) is based on the novel of the same name, written by Angelo Cannavacciuolo who, soon after the end of the fights, spent six months in Sarajevo. The Sarajevo symphonic orchestra continued in its activity even during the war, receiving no permanent wages. Through the music were its members trying to maintain a flicker of hope in the hearts of the sorely tried inhabitants of the city. The title has its origin in the local legend - it emerged in context of many war victims being shot by snipers. When fog lay over the river, the snipers could not “work”. The locals called the fog a “breath of the fairies” who benignly protected the inhabitants. The language of the libretto is almost journalistic, prosaic, but with a strong political charge and esoteric features, e.g. in the character of the mother figure who appears and disappears suddenly, just as the fairies do.
The NMST opera company will produce this opera in its world première in co-production with Theater Vorpommern (Germany). It will be presented in the Italian original with Czech subtitles.
