Oscar Wilde
AN IDEAL HUSBAND
/Directed by: Janusz Klimsza, set designer: Martin Víšek as a guest, costumes designer: Eliška Zapletalová as a guest/
Oscar Fingal O’Flahertie Wills Wilde (1854–1900), an English playwright and prose writer of Irish origin became famous for his artistic work as well as stormy personal life. His plays have distinctive exquisite wit and clairvoyance, their heroes’ rejoinders address all manners of topics, therefore having been quoted in collections of famous sayings a lot. An Ideal Husband combines personal life of the characters with the world of high politics. The English politics of the close of the 19th century might seem unattractive for us, but this comedy will convince you of the contrary: honest politicians, corruptible politicians, politicians ridiculous in their seriousness, intrigues, blackmailing, corruption…Was all this really happening more than one hundred years ago?
