Today I was with Mr. Fyodor Dostoyevsky.
Presented to me as a novelist,
who wants to write the story of Zina.
And after all, it was intriguing enough.
Our spectators may remember the composer Hans Krása in relation to the children’s opera Brundibár. Nevertheless, Hans Krása, whose works ended in the Terezín Ghetto same as works of many other composers of Jewish origin, had composed Betrothal in a Dream many years earlier. The plot, which is inspired by the novella Uncle’s Dream by the nineteenth-century classical Russian writer F. M. Dostoevsky, brings us to a small, mid-nineteenth-century Russian town. The protagonists are introduced with a comic exaggeration within the story. The plot takes place in a house of Maria Alexandrovna who tries to marry her daughter Zina off well. For this reason, it is so convenient that an old Prince appears back in town. Nonetheless, there is a young diplomat Pavel, Prince’s relative, who loves Zina, and Zina wants to marry a poor, sick teacher Fedya. The plot, in which a dream forms an essential part, has a surprising point…
Betrothal in a Dream premiered in the New German Theatre—today’s Prague State Opera—in 1933. Directed by Karel Drgáč and in co-production with the Mannheim National Theatre, the opera appeared in the Prague State Opera’s repertoire again in 1994.
Our theatre stages the work for the first time by means of which the so-called Terezín Cycle shall be opened. The aim of the cycle is to remind and stage works of three composers who were transported to Terezín and murdered in Auschwitz later.
Performed in German with Czech and English subtitles
