The columnist Rudolf Těsnohlídek found the inspiration to write about the adventures of the clever little fox who always manages to outwit the local gamekeeper in the cheerful drawings of the painter Stanislav Lolk. Janáček transformed the story of the fox cub, which the gamekeeper finds in the woods and one day brings to the hunting lodge, into a poetic work told partly from the animal's and partly from the human's point of view. The result is one of the composer's most imaginative operas, in which he confesses his deep love of nature and comes to terms with his own mortality.
Performed in Czech with Czech and English surtitles

Premieres on 6 and 8 June 2024 at the Antonín Dvořák Theatre
