SMETANA OPERA CYCLE OSTRAVA 2024

The National Moravian-Silesian Theatre in Ostrava is the only opera house in the Czech Republic and world that has achieved to stage own productions of all 8 completed operas by Bedřich Smetana. The March edition of the cycle was held from 2 to 10 March 2024 and opened by The Brandenburgers in Bohemia on the composer’s 200th birthday. The May edition of the cycle begins on 4 May 2024 and will be concluded by concert rendition of Libuše on 140th anniversary of the composer’s death on 12 May 2024. Operas within the cycle are chronologically ordered but exceptional Libuše closes the event. The March edition abounds with 94% attendance rate, with nearly 4,000 attendees, including 250 from abroad. We thank all the spectators for creating a wonderful festival atmosphere!

In celebration of Smetana's anniversary, the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre has published Bedřich Smetana & OPERA – a collection of libretti from all completed operas by Bedřich Smetana, available in both the Czech original and new English translation.

|
The project is implemented with the financial support from the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, from the Statutory City of Ostrava and under the auspices of Mayor Jan Dohnal, MSc, and Governor of the Moravian-Silesian Region.
