In the beginning, there is a fourfold oath of asceticism. The young king of Navarre and three of his companions intend to devote themselves entirely to the study and spiritual cultivation. And that means freezing all desires for three years. That's it, three years will go by in no time. “And how easy it is to put ‘years’ to the word ‘three’, and study three years in two words, the dancing horse will tell you.” However, the French princess arrives at court soon with three of her ladies, and the oath quickly takes its course. This comedy full of playfulness, puns, and tongue-in-cheek wit proves that no commands and bans can silence human nature. “A man, if I live; and this, by, in, and without, upon the instant: by heart you love her, because your heart cannot come by her; in heart you love her, because your heart is in love with her; and out of heart you love her, being out of heart that you cannot enjoy her.”
