Two-act chamber opera from 1946 One of the most famous chamber operas, tailor-made for Britten's Opera Company. Even before it was performed it was censored and dubbed "highly obscene". The storyline of the opera is based on Roman history: Lucretia, wife of Roman nobleman Tarquinia Collatina, committed suicide after being raped by the son of the last Roman king of Etruscan origin. The story carries weighty human and moral messages; it is a piece which can satisfy the audience with its suggestive ending borne in a Christian spirit. When the sweet and innocent rest, murder and lust work their best.
