Robert Schumann

Premiere Feb 27, 2014, 6.30 PM - Antonín Dvořák Theatre

Operatic poem about conjugal faithfulness
The only opera of the great Romantic composer

logoInformace

The main part of Robert Schumann’s work lies in compositions for the piano, often called musical poetry. However, for many years the composer also searched for themes that could be used for an opera. Eventually, he composed an opera, but because his life was cut short, it was the only opera he had ever composed. He found his inspiration in the then popular legend about Genoveva, which was set in the old days in today’s France. Schumann created an operatic poem about faithful love of countess Genoveva, who, during the absence of her husband warrior Siegfried, resists not only the seductions of knight Golo but also the evil conspiracy of sorceress Margaretha.
