Although Martin Walser is a highly regarded (controversial) author in Germany, he is little known in our country, which is a great pity. His works are often provocative and unusual but he is a real master of pen. He surely knows how to draw the reader or spectator in. Just reading Der Schwarze Schwan one can hardly breathe. The staging of this play promises a profound experience although rather gloomy. Nearly twenty years after the World War II, a son of one of the war criminals bears on his shoulders (whether knowingly or not) his father’s deeds and he experiences the same as his father. Meanwhile his father tries hard to conceal any trace of his past...A fascinating drama with Hamlet-like motifs, suspense and deep immersion into the psychology of the characters are the reasons for staging this play for demanding audience.
