Opera in two parts from 1920. Libretto by Viktor Dyk (1877-1931), The Excursion of Mr. Broucek to the Moon and František Serafínský Procházka (1861-1939), The Excursion of Mr. Broucek to the 15th century based on Svatopluk Čech. The fifth in the series of Janáček’s completed operas was based on the novel by Svatopluk Čech. It was a popular satire directed at big-heads who thought of themselves as heroes. In the first part Matej Broucek takes a trip to the Moon where he encounters an idealistic world of artists who do not eat nor drink but only discuss art. In the second part he finds himself in the 15th century among the Hussites. Broucek preaches about the need to defend truth, but then, when he is seen begging the Crusaders to be rescued, he is sentenced to death by burning. From the agony of death he is saved by waking up in an empty beer barrel in front of the pub Vikarka at the Prague Castle realizing with relief that it was only a dream.
