Opera in five acts from 1928. Libretto by the composer based on a novel of the same name written by Valery Bryusov (1873-1924) from 1908.

Considering used musical means, The Fiery Angel is next to The Gambler the most modern Prokofiev’s opera which was composed as a contrast to playful The Love for Three Oranges. The composer was fascinated by the novel written by symbolist Valery Bryusov, especially his ingenious connection of historical tale and real history.

The story is focused on the character of Renata. It contains short episodes with the real historical character Agrippa von Nettesheim (a powerful sorcerer), Renata’s meeting with Count Heinrich – the presumed angel in human body, and a scene with Faust and Mephistopheles (a demonic sorcerer).  Ruprecht’s narration escalates into Renata’s final condemnation and death. She is burned at the stake in front of the eyes of helpless Ruprecht.

Performed in Russian with Czech subtitles.
