Fairy-tale opera in three acts from 1895
Libretto by Jaroslav Vrchlický (1853-1912) based on the William Shakespeare’s (1564 – 1616) play of the same name

Fibich, as representative of the post- Smetana  generation, turns away from national revivalist ideas and towards new directions, specifically passionate eroticism, expressive lyricism and a variety of sound colours. The piece stands in contrast to the well-known piece by Gounod’s, as well as Verdi’s Shakespearean themed operas. The core of this opera is based on an intimate diary capturing the love of Anezka Schulzova and the composer. The story is acted out on a mysterious island with its immaterial inhabitants, where generosity triumphs over narrow-minded hatred. The muggy and aromatic air makes you tipsy…
