One of the greatest classical ballets, Swan Lake, is almost a symbol of the art of ballet. Inspired by a fairytale from a collection of German national fairytales about princess Odette, sorcerer Rothbart and unhappy prince Siegfried, the story became immortal thanks to Tchaikovsky’s music. The premiere in 1877 was not well received. Tchaikovsky died in 1893 convinced that his work was a complete failure. The only production of his Swan Lake (a part of it) that met with success was in 1888 in the National Theatre in Prague. Tchaikovsky noted down in his diary: “Great success. One minute of complete happiness.”
