The most well-known Czech adaptation of Aristophanes’ comedy The Birds is Japery According to Aristophanes by poet Jiří Žáček. Director Stanislav Moša and composer Zdeněk Merta, one of the most significant co-authors in the Czech musical theatre, met for the first time during the stage production of Žáček’s adaptation, which took place right before the revolution. In the coming years, they have returned to the text several times in order to summon the spirit of human slapstick with its elemental playfulness, plebeian lack of respect, and humorous verve.
