The stage production is based on the film script written by Zdeněk Podskalský dating back to the 70s of the 20th century. It was created for Karlin Musical Theatre whose producers decided to stage the musical in the courtyard of the Nostitz Palace in 2004. The stage adaptation was created by Zdeněk Podskalský Jr, the son of the well-known film director. The film script was inspired by a play of the same name written by Jaroslav Vrchlický which had its premiere in the Royal National Theatre in Prague in 1884. Vrchlický tells a story of love and relationship between the king Charles IV and his young wife Elizabeth of Pomerania. The play is set at the king’s castle Karlštejn which the king had built as a fortress where the crown jewels were kept. Allegedly the king gave a strict order that no woman may enter the castle. But what can stand up to the love of a woman?
