An evening celebrating the birth of W. A. Mozart

Choreographers Jiří Kylián, Angelin Preljocaj, Eric Gauthier, Lea Bessoudo Greck

Mozart—a shorthand for brilliance, ease, and surprising depth—and, above all, a musical spark that still speaks to us across centuries. Created for the 270th anniversary of his birth, More Than Mozart! brings together five choreographies linked by one common thread: Mozart’s music.

At the heart of the evening are two landmark works by Jiří Kylián: Sechs Tänze and Petite Mort. Sechs Tänze teases social convention with wit, exaggeration, and a dash of absurdity, while Petite Mort is the opposite in tone—stripped-back, sensual, and almost mythic in its celebration of the body, love, and desire.

Mozart’s Adagio from Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major (K. 488)—heard in Petite Mort—also accompanies the pas de deux from Angelin Preljocaj’s Le Parc. The duet traces a quiet journey toward intimacy, moving through the shifting stages of a relationship: attraction, hesitation, desire, and a gradual coming together.

A darker, more contemplative note is struck by Lea Bessoudo Greck’s Requiem, created especially for More Than Mozart!. Inspired by Mozart’s requiem mass, it treats death not as a final stop, but as a threshold—an opening into transformation and something new. The evening then turns toward humour again with Eric Gauthier’s Ballet 102, where there is no music at all—only the choreographer’s voice. With razor-sharp timing, the duet plays with the classical pas de deux vocabulary and offers a light, knowing wink at ballet tradition.

More Than Mozart! is a celebration of contrasting choreographic styles, united by Mozart’s unmistakable genius. From passion and tenderness to laughter and existential questions, the five pieces form a richly varied evening that shows how alive the conversation between music and dance can be.
